随着当代盖邮戳机的应用与电子邮件的迅速普及，邮票的使用量在不断减少。即便如此，邮票的每年世界使用量还是数以十亿计的。

搜集旧邮票的人，都很讲究邮戳。集邮者一般喜欢邮票上的邮戳盖得少，盖有位置在角上，墨色要清淡。这样的邮票，画面清晰美观，差不多和新票一样，称得“上品 ”。但是有的集邮者却与此相反，他们特别注重邮戳的完整性，以整个邮戳盖在邮票正中为上品。要求墨色浓匀，地名和日期清楚可辨，至于邮票图案能否看清楚并不重要。因为只盖一小角邮戳的邮票缺乏研究价值。这种搜集方法，虽然以前并不普遍，而近年来已受到集邮界的极大重视。
